Commercial Partner comments on GDPR for the travel industry in Travel Weekly30th May 2017
Commercial partner Matthew Pryke commented on The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), due to come into force next May, in Travel Weekly.
In the article travel firms were reminded of the risk of breaching the new EU data-protection rules and to question the data they hold on customers.
Matthew, who spoke recently to the travel industry at the ABTA Travel Law Seminar in London, warned that regulators “will be geared up to make examples” of businesses.
“We want information – the idea is data is valuable.” “But most of the time, most data collected is not relevant. Balance that against the risk.”
Matthew argued businesses should allocate a budget and time to comply, audit the data they hold in relation to consumers and suppliers, appoint a data protection officer and assess their marketing strategy.
“If you are not in compliance and you have not notified, you are in breach.”
